Today, in 2012, the transit of Venus across the sun began. This was the last time a transit would occur until the year 2117. I took this photo at sunset, and you can see Venus as a small black dot on the solar disk.
On June 5, 2012 Venus passed between Earth and the sun (called the Transit of Venus). This is a rare event as seen from Earth because: 1) The orbital plane of Venus is inclined 3.4° relative to Earth's orbital plane. 2) Venus has an apparent diameter of approximately 1 arc minute (1\/60 of a degree) when closest to Earth. Note that the small dark specs (if you can see them) are sunspots. I was fortunate to photograph this because I will never see it happen again and neither will you! The next time Venus transits the sun is in the year 2117. #astronomy#astrophotography#telescope#solarsystem#stargazing#venustransit#xt8
