Tumblr is a blogging and social platform where people post short pieces of text, images, GIFs, video and audio, and share other people's posts with a single "reblog". It was founded in 2007 by David Karp and is known for its fandoms, art communities and the way posts travel through tags and reblogs rather than through a classic news feed.

Who owns Tumblr?

Yahoo bought Tumblr in 2013, and it later came under Verizon. In 2019 Verizon sold Tumblr to Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com.

Why people look for an alternative

Some users left after Tumblr banned adult content in 2018; others want a platform with a larger audience, more control over their own site, or a feed that works more like other social networks.

Popular alternatives to Tumblr

  • WordPress: your own blog with full control over design and content.
  • Bluesky and Mastodon: short posts and reposts, closer to how Tumblr feels socially.
  • X (Twitter): the largest network for short posts.
  • Wix, Squarespace and Weebly: website builders if you want a portfolio or personal site instead of a feed.

Visit tumblr.com for the platform itself.
