Now defunct, Gawker was the flagship blog for Gawker Media, touting itself as “the source for daily Manhattan media news and gossip.” Founded in 2003, the site had over 23 million visits per month as of 2015. The blog came under scrutiny for posting illegally obtained content, or content that violated copyright and privacy laws, and the company was forced to pay $140 million because of a lawsuit after publishing a sex tape featuring Hulk Hogan. Gawker Media soon filed bankruptcy and was purchased by Univision. The company’s other websites continued to be run by Univision, but gawker.com made its final post in August of 2016.
