Periscope is a real-time video streaming service that connects millions of users with live video from around the world. Conceived as a way for viewers to connect to important world events, its founders came up with the idea in 2013 after protests broke out in Taksim square. The company was purchased by and subsumed into Twitter, Inc. before the product was publicly launched, but CEO Kayvon Beykpour was allowed to continue as full-time CEO of Periscope within the larger corporation. Periscope has both browser-based services and apps for iOS and Android.
